Thought up by the creative minds at 5.5 Designers for a flooring exhibition, this carpet is essentially a large roll of Tarkett flooring that can be used as a bench or unravelled and transformed into a seating / lounging area.

The designers have called it “a comfort dispenser”. It allows for flexible solutions for usual living activities. A place for children to play, a place for you or your guests to rest or nap, a place to lounge while having a long phone conversation, or for an impromptu picnic in your living room – this unusual carpet understands that living is improvised.

The chair changes its base’s color depending on what its sensors get from the environment and the users. It features a lot of built-in LEDs and sensors that control them. The idea behind the design is to create an innovative and high-quality environment responding to the behaviour of its users by visually expressing the activities surrounding them. It looks like the simplicity of improving visual appearance of public and residential spaces with furniture that feature embedded LEDs make such furniture the new trend.

Pyramid, Karim Rashid´s newest lounge chair for Nienkämper, borrows a monumental form from ancient Egypt and stands it on its head. What´s the point? According to Rashid, an inverted pyramid reflects who he is and symbolizes his hopes for the shape of things to come. He describes himself as “an upside-down multicultural being” – someone who is “Canadian-Irish-English-Algerian-Egyptian-American, with some Italian education thrown in the mix.” In short, he´s a product of an increasingly cosmopolitan world, and as such, he believes it´s time to “turn nationalism and jingoism around and become one global paradise.”

Isola 8´s name derives from the Italian word for “island” and the number of people that this compelling design accommodates. “The inspiration for Isola was to create an oasis from the static world, an island for eight that offers a myriad of seating solutions,” says Karim Rashid. The swirling form, he adds, suggests not only an island but also the symbol for infinity.

Round was originally designed for the University Library, a part of the Danish Royal Library, Copenhagen. Round was created to cater for easy socializing in the lounge areas. By composing the various basic elements it is easy to create a relaxed landscape of seating and socializing possibilities. The new humanities faculty library offers the students a well designed, functional library building designed with singular focus on creating the optimum facility based on users’ needs. The architects from Dissing+Weitling’s project group have liaised closely throughout the entire process with a user group of Royal Library employees.

The Swamp is the latest of Michiel van der Kley’s creations for Artifort. Inviting and extremely comfortable, the Swamp is available in three versions. Swamp R is a one-person chair while Swamp XL is perfect as a snug, seductive loveseat. Swamp P is an amazingly comfortable pouffe that makes an ideal footstool for the Swamp R and XL but can also be used on its own as an extra seat.

The Swamp family is fully upholstered throughout in two contrasting fabrics. And an extra bonus is that the outside fabric does not need to be a furniture fabric, providing even more possibilities. The design is interesting and makes you think about the royal seats, the varied range of colors makes the buyer’s choice more difficult. You can choose between making it an attractive piece of design in the room or just letting it “hide” in the environment.

The new modern Springtime patio furniture collection from B&B Italia offers a large range of patio products, most of them adjustable to multiple seating configurations. Sofas are an important part of the collection, having minimalistic but impressive designs. This was realised by using straight, clean line frames, made out of aluminium. The seating parts are covered in waterproof fabrics, available in three shades: grey, anthracite and acid green.

Besides sofas, there are the chaise lounges, which can be adjusted according to functional needs. The comfy headrests can be lined up or positioned in opposite directions, to allow for easy communication. B&B Italia also provides accessories, such as a pouf, tables or a steel brazier. The tables are square or rectangular, and can turn into vase holders. So much for ‘nonadjustable’ patio furniture. The Springtime patio collection from B&B Italia introduces great designs based on versatility and comfort.

Since childhood, we have constantly been instructed on the importance of a rounded education; I don’t think I ever fully understood what that meant until today. This bright bookshelf concept by designer Zhdanova Irina introduces a more spherical approach to book storage and reading.

Innovative and extremely stylish, this wheel of knowledge is compiled of six sofa pieces lined up in a circle and embraced by the bookshelf framework. The unique design offers a wealth of arrangement choices for your books and personal items, while the functionality and comfort of the integrated seating tastefully stirs your mood for reading.

Still, unless you actually own a playground, you will probably opt for blocking up this structure for stability. I guess this rounds up the talking; now we wait and hope the stunning design rolls out onto the market.

Ligne Roset defines Confluences ….

“CONFLUENCES is a breath of fresh air which breaks with all the normal conventions of upholstered furniture. This piece will please not only lovers of radical design, but also all those who are seduced by a multiplicity of possible sitting positions, and the as yet unheard-of conviviality offered by its colourful, unbridled compositions with evocative names such as the ‘Toi et moi’ (‘You and me’) love seat, the ‘small conversation settee’ and ‘large conversation settee’, or the 4-seat settee with two integral chaises longue.

At first glance, CONFLUENCES appears to be the fruit of the designer’s creative musings on the theme of uncompromising volumes. And yet, one will be amazed to discover that it is simply the result of a reasoned approach on the part of the designer, with a view to offering the best possible response to customer demand for personalised comfort.”

Philippe Nigro about Confluences…

“How can one dream up a settee capable of satisfying the greatest possible number of users? Their body shapes, their tastes? The CONFLUENCES settee unites them all, for it draws its inspiration from variety.”

One possible answer was to offer a variety of seat depths and back heights on a single settee, in order to match the comfort with the expectations of the individual user. This approach naturally came with the disadvantage of having to make varying proportions work in a harmonious way in terms of form.

The success of CONFLUENCES, inspired by contemporary art, rests on the repetition, addition and direct stringing together of different volumes. In this way, a number of seats offering a variety of sitting positions are brought close and locked together; simple, almost neutral lines are used in order to enable the formal fusion of their volumes: the seat platforms flow together, overlapping each other as if in a giant puzzle, connected by nuances of shade. Without symmetry and without any visible regularity, this principal is endlessly usable and makes it possible to create a wide variety of pieces, all of which both different and surprising, almost with a life of their own: 2-seater, 3-seater, 4-seater with lounge seat, fireside chair, Vis-à-vis.

Confluences …

Each piece of CONFLUENCES seating unites varying seat heights and seat depths and offers new, entirely unstructured forms in the service of a great variety of sitting positions and personalisation of comfort, supported by a well-considered combination of varying densities of foam. The personalisation is so extensive that the left and right-hand versions of the 3-seater with lounge seat are not exactly symmetrical.

The mobile occasional table, which can also be used as an armrest, is quite deliberately an asymmetrical, unique piece, whilst the lumbar cushions, filled with pure down, also contribute to the general adaptability and freedom of use. Finally, the colour combinations chosen underscore the unstructured nature of the CONFLUENCES seating. Each item is available in a monocolour or multicolour interpretation. Philippe Nigro himself has suggested 27 possible colour combinations in a variety of covering materials.
