British design firm Channels is set to launch its latest collection of furniture and lighting – Motley III – at 100% Design in London, September 24th-27th.

As a follow-on to the award-winning Motley II collection launched last September, Motley III is a series of ten new furniture and lighting designs by Samuel Chan for Channels. The series explores new geometric and organic forms and reflects Samuel’s signature purist style. Inherent in his approach is an ability to understand the ongoing potential of wood in new design. His work presents wood in a bold and simple way that requires no further embellishment.

Floor/ Pendant Lamp

This freestanding lamp series comes in three sizes and introduces an organic form made from solid curved oak batons on a trunk like base. Central cylinder of frosted glass gives diffused light. A Pendant version of the lamp is also available, using the organic form only and evocative of a lantern.

Egg

Sculptural, egg-shaped forms turned in solid Ash. Subtly scooped seat.

Baton Chair

Round Chair on low revolving base. Made from hand-carved batons of solid Oak.

Pallet Drawer System

A series of stackable drawer units, available in six different drawer configurations. Combine the different options as you like to build your bespoke storage cabinet.

Pallet Shelf System

A series of stackable shelf units, available in six configurations. Combine the different options as you like.

Voyage Chair

Oak-veneered bent plywood chair on trapeziumshaped solid frame.

Oval Dining Table, Round Dining Table & Side Tables

Oak wood tabletop featuring glass covered ‘portholes’ to reveal the woodworking detail of the tripod base.

Australian designer Simone LeAmon has won the 2009 Cicely & Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award for the Lepidoptera Chair. The award focuses on contemporary design in the Australian state of Victoria, and is organized by the National Gallery of Victoria. This year, the award was dedicated to contemporary seat furniture design.

Simone LeAmon says :

“Titled Lepidoptera after the insect species of moths and butterflies, my concept draws on the anatomy of a butterfly’s wing to bring purpose to the formal equation of structure, colour and pattern. Translated from Greek to mean ‘scale’ and ‘wing’, Lepidoptera are powerful signifiers of evolutionary process, providing new perspectives on issues as diverse as climate change, technology, structure and aesthetics.”

Present in Lepidoptera is LeAmon’s long-held fascination for the equation between mobility and freedom and the machismo of moto culture. Central to her practice as both designer and artist are the transference of desire and passion for products that tell a story through process and material. Referencing the automotive interior and low orientation of the driver’s seat in her Tom Matano designed sports coupé, LeAmon designed Lepidoptera while exploring the concept of the ‘power-seat’.

A key feature of Lepidoptera is the use of textile remnants and R&D spillage from Australia’s leading automotive textile manufacturer Autofab. One intriguing aspect is the textile component, which shares linkages to the automotive interiors of Holden, Ford and Mitsubishi vehicles manufactured in Victoria over the past decade.

About Simone LeAmon….

Simone LeAmon is a designer and contemporary artist. She is the founding director of O. S. INITIATIVE design studio. LeAmon has developed product designs and concepts for international clients in lighting, furniture, interior accessories, graphics, motorcycle apparel, fashion and jewellery. She holds the position of Creative Director at Planex, a leading Australian design manufacturer and is the Australasian Design Ambassador for Italian lighting design company Oluce.

Simone first worked in contemporary arts, graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1993. BLA STATION is a family business, established in 1986 and based in the little seaside town of Ahus on the Swedish south-east coast, where the sea is forever restless.

BLA STATION makes furniture using carefully chosen techniques and materials. For many years their language of design has been intimately associated with circles, birch and stainless steel – Borge’s chosen idiom. Today the expressions, materials and shapes have evolved from close cooperation with new young designers, new industries. But the philosophy behind it all remains the same. “We believe that to
meet the demands and desires of today you need an innovative frame of mind, a child’s curiosity – and a heart that refuses to take the easy way out.”

“Curiosity is our fuel as we keep searching, not for the already known and established, but for the unexpected, yet-to-be-discovered. Sometimes that is compelling us to decipher new codes; to dissect the entire production process from standing tree to sitting surface, from iron ore to metal frame.”

Oppo

After years of experimenting with the thin seat shells in laminated Formfelt, Stefan Borselius has given shape to a new piece of furniture that seems totally skinless. A body, a form, an “alien” that makes you want to communicate with it. OPPO comes in two sizes; high or low. And in the near future, it will also be available with armrests.

Koja

Kom! Vi bygger en KOJA! Come on! Lets build a hut! Fredrik Mattson invites you to build a KOJA. Should we go for a big or small one? A hut that’s high or low? Or, how about both? Lets bring soft pillows to make it nice and cozy. A quiet and calm place that provides shelter against the wind, the rain and all the noises.

Pebble

Because of their size, strength and unchangeable qualities, rocks and stones symbolize harmony. This remarkable ability to create calm was the perfect inspiration for a series of upholstered furniture. The goal of the young German designers Osko + Deichmann was to design a sofa that could provide both harmony and an opportunity to recharge – right in the midst of a hectic life.

A LuxeHome participant at IDS, Roseland Art & Decoration is showing the Macao Table PM, which should fulfill their goal of bringing you furniture, lighting, and objets d’arts that “nourish the soul of the home.”

Macao Table PM…

The Toronto gallery is wisely featuring the new table by Francois Champsaur, who studied at both the Beaux Art of Marseilles and the Arts Decoratifs of Paris and since 1999 has been concentrating on “an important collection of seats and furniture.” His lacquered metal Macao Table PM measures 48 ½” wide x 17” high x 26” deep, making it the perfect size to grace your living room, a centerpiece in black, white, red, or a limited edition polished stainless steel. Part Calder, part Miro, part kidney bean.

The bean-shaped surface is carried by three “feet,” each of which is part of another amoeba-like form, reminding me that indeed “Three is the Magic Number” (an anthem to engineering and everything tripodal from School House Rock).

Many of these pieces, which are meant for residential design, also work well for commercial projects. Imagine the Macao Table PM in black at Madrid’s AC Palacio del Retiro, where it might seem to have jumped straight out of a giant Lichtenstein print of “Drowning Girl”; or in white at South Beach’s Gansevoort Hotel, where it could complement the intense pops of magenta. The offerings of Roseland Art & Decoration can nourish the soul of the hotel as well.

Time stands still for no man. Time is ever changing and, in turn, it demands we change. It is time to find the space you need, the growth you desire, the harmony you deserve. It is time to swiTCh…

Introduction

Modern lifestyles require modern design. In an increasingly cluttered world, space is the key for living as without space we cannot grow and without growth we cannot live. Design is the key to space, the key to growth.

SwiTCh embraces this reality and changes with your lifestyle. We are not the same person all the time. We change, moment to moment, second to second, meeting the needs of our environment and lifestyle as required. SwiTCh is a new concept in design that can accompany you on this never-ending journey of adaptation. It is a chair and a table – or both – as you require. Encompassing the timeless geometries of both a cube and a sphere it is both formal and relaxed, soft and structured, ready for work and play.

SwiTCh does not speak of its ingenuity, choosing rather to blend effortlessly into whichever role you chose, yet remains intelligent enough to SwiTCh instantly, to stay in tune with your life, to provide the space you need.

Time stands still for no man. Time is ever changing and, in turn, it demands, we change. It is time to find the space you need, the growth you desire, the harmony you deserve. It is time to SwiTCh.

The Concept

Switch is a new concept in design. It is a chair and a table, a relaxing seat and a small working place in one. It switches instantly and effortlessly.

Encompassing the timeless geometries of both a cube and a sphere, Switch is formal and playful. The balance of contrasts yet providing highest comfort for seating, working and playing.
