Karim Rashid has designed two new seating pieces for the Canadian manufacturer Nienkämper.

Pyramid, Karim Rashid´s newest lounge chair for Nienkämper, borrows a monumental form from ancient Egypt and stands it on its head. What´s the point? According to Rashid, an inverted pyramid reflects who he is and symbolizes his hopes for the shape of things to come. He describes himself as “an upside-down multicultural being” – someone who is “Canadian-Irish-English-Algerian-Egyptian-American, with some Italian education thrown in the mix.” In short, he´s a product of an increasingly cosmopolitan world, and as such, he believes it´s time to “turn nationalism and jingoism around and become one global paradise.”

Isola 8´s name derives from the Italian word for “island” and the number of people that this compelling design accommodates. “The inspiration for Isola was to create an oasis from the static world, an island for eight that offers a myriad of seating solutions,” says Karim Rashid. The swirling form, he adds, suggests not only an island but also the symbol for infinity.

Round is a collection of seating that has been designed by Danish architects Dissing+Weitling and produced by the Belgian manufacturers Quinze & Milan.

Round was originally designed for the University Library, a part of the Danish Royal Library, Copenhagen. Round was created to cater for easy socializing in the lounge areas. By composing the various basic elements it is easy to create a relaxed landscape of seating and socializing possibilities. The new humanities faculty library offers the students a well designed, functional library building designed with singular focus on creating the optimum facility based on users’ needs. The architects from Dissing+Weitling’s project group have liaised closely throughout the entire process with a user group of Royal Library employees.

Philippe Starck’s Privé Collection of furniture, designed for Cassina USA, offers “great comfort and a variety of solutions”—and here “solutions” is code for never having to get up.

Privé includes armchairs, sofas, chaise lounges, ottomans, and most importantly, islands. Yes, islands large and small. With fixed and adjustable armrests (these double as headrests, I assure you, as well as convenient locations to rest one’s drink). Cassina USA claims that with Prive “nothing is forbidden”—and I am already devising all manner of sinful activities that the furniture might enable (drawings to come later). Described as “provocative and ironic,” the Privé Collection gives you all the sloth without any of the guilt.

The polished aluminum structure and quilted leather upholstery elevate languor to an activity reserved for those at the pinnacle of society, so that idleness conveniently becomes the height of urban sophistication. Padding is available in different densities, and backrests are removable—all the more reason to get creative with one’s dilatoriness. Leather strips along the base and leather hand-straps on the back cushions only increase the ardent desire to self-indulge. Should absinthe regain the popularity it rightly deserves, Privé might be the perfect piece for the modern-day drinker of wormwood. The Green Fairy might in fact be the ideal mascot for the Privé island.

But Privé does not have to be a sordid affair. The various configurations lend themselves well to other activities. In black, the Privé couch is great for the patients of traditional psychoanalysis. In white, the Privé chair is a good option for enjoying simple pleasures: listening to music, reading a novel, ignoring one’s spouse. Thanks to Philippe Starck for reinvigorating laziness—and dressing it up in such finery.

The Roberti Collection of modern outdoor rattan furniture is a “must have” for those who like to be sorrounded with beautiful and comfortable pieces of furniture. Sofas, sun loungers, tables and chairs, and sun shades: the shapes and style of each piece is carefully considered to combine comfort and functionality.

The new generation of rattan furniture is made from aluminium and Sunweave – a synthetic material that looks natural, but is far more hard-wearing. The days of racing to bring in your garden furniture at the first sign of bad weather are well and truly over! Roberti has been producing stunning wood and rattan items for 50 years, but with the introduction of new materials the range has more diversity and versatility than ever before.

Just imagine how beautiful a patio would look with these awesome pieces of furniture! You could have a tea, a party or just relax …

When did the skateboard revival occur? Difficult to say (difficult, also, to establish with certainty that it was, in fact, a revival), but sometime between the mid-70s and the first year of the new Millennium, skateboarding took a turn towards an urbanized variety of pseudo-anarchy and revolt.

Given all this—along with the augmenting sense that skating as counter-culture is no more—it was refreshing to encounter the collection of recycled skateboard furniture by Skate Study House. As many other people who watched their younger brothers or friends splinter, fracture, and use up deck upon laminate deck, I can say with authority that this collection is the best use for the detritus of the sport (be said detritus corporeal or metaphoric) I’ve yet seen. Based on a “passion for mid-century design, skateboard culture, and California lifestyle”—and inspired by John Entenza’s seminal Case Study House architectural program—Skate Study House re-fashions discarded skateboards into stylish contemporary furnishings reminiscent of the golden age of bentwood.

This collection gleams with golden hues, shines with the ebon of upholstered vinyl black as pitch. While the signature piece is the Eames-inspired God Father Lounge Chair, I prefer the one they call Jet Set. Consisting of eight neoprene-wrapped skateboard decks (appropriately, the neoprene is recycled from surfers’ wet suits) atop a curved metal frame—the frame very like a wave or a half-pipe—the Jet Set is an apropo icon for the decline (or, more kindly, evolution) of youth—so be it, but at least we can assert that with maturity comes good taste.

Air Lounge System is a piece of furniture that looks like something you might see in some futuristic movie, but who knows maybe this is the future of furniture, rounded shapes and angles. The sofas and armchairs of the Air Lounge System are in moulded cold-cure flexible polyurethane foam. The padding completely incorporates the supporting structure, which is made of electro-welded steel plate; the suspension in the seating consists of elastic straps fixed to the basic structure. The unusual ring shape of this model makes the sewing and fitting of the upholstery especially difficult – so much so that the skill with which it has been accomplished is clearly evident even to non-expert eyes.
