Allan Lake tells us the story of his work in the following words : “I create sculpted wood furniture; my endeavour is one with a dual purpose. I work to bring harmony to the play between function and aesthetics. I create high quality working items of sculpted furniture that also act as visually stimulating, tactile works of art.

My collection to date has been developed by commission or as speculative one-offs, each piece of sculpted furniture being unique in its materials and concept. A variety of British hardwoods sourced from sustained woodlands are my chosen media, often complemented by the use of other materials such as stained glass, metals and various coloured resins.

When making a commissioned piece of sculpted furniture, the environment in which it will live, the natural suggestions of the chosen woods, combined with customer requirement and input all inform me as to how a piece will evolve. The physical development of my work incorporates a variety of complex traditional and contemporary techniques of making to achieve the forms I envisage.

Finishing a piece is a very fulfilling process. I use a variety of finishes on my furniture my preferred being an oil finish. This requires patience as it is developed in layers forming a protective and nourishing coating. When completed this finish creates a natural window of incite into the true colours, tones and wonderful depth of character to be found within the grain and contours of the wood. Softening the sheen of this finish with a clear wax coating mellows the look and feel of the finished piece.

Every piece is unique and beautiful in it’s own way as he usually designs after visiting the space his furniture is designed for “I visit the customer to meet them and get a feel for their space or alternately the customer visits the workshop to meet me and view and discuss examples of my work.”

Each piece of furniture is unique to the needs of each costumer.
