Add a touch of modern and retro to your living room furniture collection with this sleek, retro modern sofa by Leolux.

The Morena sofa, created by designer Stefan Heiliger, is described as a “sculptural form melting towards the floor.” There are no boring, straight lines to be found in this couch. It features a minimalist palette that’s enhanced by its unusual, asymmetrical shape, giving it some retro touch. The flowing lines overlap and blend into one another, making it easy to combine several elements to create cozy custom seating for any-size group. Available in leather or fabric upholstery in a variety of colors, this sofa is the picture of contemporary comfort and modern style.

Ever wanted to bring nature closer? Well now you got the perfect chance!

With Furnibloom you can grow a variety of plants on your own balcony or anywhere you could place a table and some chairs. Furnibloom was created by landscape architect Dagný Bjarnadóttir and is actually a set of plexiglas furniture.

Initially created in 2007, the hybrid furniture has maintained a low profile despite its timely design. Included in Iceland’s forward-thinking festival DesignMarch, Furnibloom finally takes the international stage at Shanghai’s 2010 World Expo as part of the Nordic Lighthouse exhibition, on display through 15 August 2010.

These pieces of furniture can house a variety of plants. This is possible by creating a good micro climate for the vegetation to grow inside day-to-day furniture, such as chairs or tables. A double functionality is ensured. First off, one could actually plant vegetables within such unusual furniture (we read this is possible). Its aesthetic feature is obvious: these tables and chairs are absolutely lovely and they have the means to cheer up any interior or entertainment outdoor space.

“Capillair” is the work of a Duch designer Carolijn Slottje and is a project in the shape of an ingenious adaptable storage system idea.

Of course you are wondering what is so special about it, you should know that Capillair is a modular furniture piece made from flexible materials such as rubber or felt. Its structure makes it possible for it to adapt and take the shape of its surrounding environment. Another interesting aspect of this design is its cell-like components, which are various in form and also have different sizes. We would add their unusual ability of adapting to the items placed inside. This storage system could act as a regular bookcase or as a cool decorative element.

This innovative storage system has it’s special benefits. First of all it’s the fact that it occupies only the amount of space in which there are things placed. For instance a shelf will always have the same dimensions no matter how many books or decoration pieces are placed on it but Capillair will mould itself on the objects placed in it.
Secondly it has an interesting look and could fit nicely in modern decorated interiors.

From Peter Rolfe comes this interesting looking decorative indoor element which fits in most minimalist interiors, adding a touch of contemporaneity.

“The Orbs” – seemingly without any functional importance- are not only aesthetic. A closer look will reveal that this is actually an original sculptural chest of drawers. Its generous size (Height 1500mm x Width 600mm) allows the storage of many products that are very easily left to chance around the house, keeping it from being “spotless”: books, magazines, Cd’s, cats- you name it. Once those drawers are locked, the design looks like a leveled sphere and there’s no telling of it housing all that stuff.

We don’t know how many of you out there would go for this type of imprints, but we find the idea to be quite interesting which is why we decided to share it. Called “Industry series”, the designs are made of Indian rosewood and feature animals, insects, birds, guns and various industrial objects, all integrated in a overall dark theme. Bones and skeletons are the recurrent graphics. It may be just a subjective opinion with no grounds, but I do not find these furniture items to be all that scary or shocking. Still, it takes a strong personality to own a table or a locker of this sort. What do you think?

British design firm Channels is set to launch its latest collection of furniture and lighting – Motley III – at 100% Design in London, September 24th-27th.

As a follow-on to the award-winning Motley II collection launched last September, Motley III is a series of ten new furniture and lighting designs by Samuel Chan for Channels. The series explores new geometric and organic forms and reflects Samuel’s signature purist style. Inherent in his approach is an ability to understand the ongoing potential of wood in new design. His work presents wood in a bold and simple way that requires no further embellishment.

Floor/ Pendant Lamp

This freestanding lamp series comes in three sizes and introduces an organic form made from solid curved oak batons on a trunk like base. Central cylinder of frosted glass gives diffused light. A Pendant version of the lamp is also available, using the organic form only and evocative of a lantern.

Egg

Sculptural, egg-shaped forms turned in solid Ash. Subtly scooped seat.

Baton Chair

Round Chair on low revolving base. Made from hand-carved batons of solid Oak.

Pallet Drawer System

A series of stackable drawer units, available in six different drawer configurations. Combine the different options as you like to build your bespoke storage cabinet.

Pallet Shelf System

A series of stackable shelf units, available in six configurations. Combine the different options as you like.

Voyage Chair

Oak-veneered bent plywood chair on trapeziumshaped solid frame.

Oval Dining Table, Round Dining Table & Side Tables

Oak wood tabletop featuring glass covered ‘portholes’ to reveal the woodworking detail of the tripod base.

The To Be Continued Bench takes its design cue from a previous project by Julien Carretero entitled Chapter One.

Chapter One sought to create a unique product using serial production: “Instead of leaving randomness managing the differences, it uses the repetitive actions existing within the production process as a tool for differentiation.” Each Chapter One piece produced relies on the piece that came before it, forming a constructional echo chain wherein every piece exists “because of the others and could not have been designed without the others.”

How does this work exactly? Carretero explains, “Each layer is casted on top of the one casted before following the exact outline of it. Because of the imperfection of the cast, the object slowly mutates.” Using the same philosophy, Julien Carretero designed the To Be Continued Bench, whose name is more indicative of the construction behind it than the previous Chapter One. Made of layers of polyurethane composite, To Be Continued looks like a bench slowly folding in on itself. What begins as standard seating (right angles intact) ends as otherworldly seating—something bright and hallucinatory, a bench trapped in between the two realms of Tim Burton’s Coraline. Like Chapter One, To Be Continued aims for singularity within the manufacturing process: “Instead of leaving randomness manage the differences, it uses the repetitive actions existing within the production process as a tool for differentiation.”

The stripes are reminiscent of lollipops, the great big round ones that look as if they’ll topple over on their sticks. The transfiguration from one side to another is like a vortical experiment performed by Pink Floyd. The To be Continued Bench is the funhouse mirror of furniture, aptly designed by someone who hails from The Netherlands, home of all things great and goofy, wondrous and witty, experimental and exceptional.

The interior design company JSPR that also creates its own furniture collections “is always experimenting with new innovative materials in its production studio.”

One such permutation is their Plastic Fantastic—a line of indoor/outdoor pieces covered in a soft, flexible, “thick layer of rubber!” The concoction of JSPR’s founder Jasper van Grootel, Plastic Fantastic is the company’s best-known collection. Obviously durable, the material is surprisingly comfortable—due to the secret JSPR technology, which I like to imagine is invented in clandestine laboratories by men in white coats and ascots. Plastic Fantastic has birthed a wide-ranging line of furniture, from Dining Chairs to Club Chairs, Salon Tables to Grand Dressoirs.

It is the juxtaposition of the substance and the style that defines Plastic Fantastic. Curved legs, lavish ornamentation, tufted fabrics all become ironic statements when produced in plastic—lovely commentary on the history of furnishings and domesticity in general. Color too transforms staid silhouettes: choose any hue, though the standard options are many—from neutrals like camel, sand, and chocolate; to brights like sky blue, ochre, and lime; from classic black, white, and anthracite; to feminine soft pink, magenta, and aubergine. Any color of the rainbow and everything in between can be had in Plastic Fantastic. JSPR’s furniture collection becomes a real beauty in its signature coating of pliable, yielding, responsive rubber.
