The Octopus Chair comes from Korean designer Samwoong Lee and brings with it an unusual and daring style.

It is called “Octopus” because it has a lot of different shapes, depending on the angle of sight. Here is some information from the project’s creator: “The material called natural mother-of-pearl never has the same color and pattern. In addition, the pattern, the color and the reflexivity of natural mother-of-pearl is changed by the angle. I would like to express the relationship between a man and a man and the one between a man and a thing by using natural mother-of-pearl. The pieces of countless mother-of-pearl surround the whole body with organic shapes creating the Octopus chair.” This is an interesting idea for a modern interior with a futuristic feel.

The Vuzzle Chair by Christopher Daniel is made of 59 cushion cells that can be arranged according to ones moods.

Inspired by the Voronoi diagram, each cushion has a neodymium magnet that can remove them and put them together easily to create a chair. You remove 13 cushions and the cube turns into chair to sit on. Each cushion has magnets under the surface which hold the whole structure together. Available in three different color patterns, Vuzzle Milk, Vuzzle Neat and Vuzzle Bloody Mary, the modular chair employs only 46 cells, while the other 13 cushions can be used as individual cushion/stool or footrest for the chair.

It is true that walking through the Furniture Fair can get a little tiring, because it is simply huge.

This is probably why German designers Yvonne Fehling and Jennie Peiz decided to present their new collection called ’Still Lives’, including life-sized tufted pigs meant to be used as chairs for the passers by and also for the future customers. The “pigs” are probably not all that comfortable, but could become a precious design home product for anyone into unusual interiors. I was a little bit intrigued when seeing them and can’t hardly wait for your opinion. Would you buy one of these for your home?

Creator of Extra Ordinary Recycled Furniture, Katie Thompson admits she’s a “hoarder of all things useless, impractical, broken, colorful and shiny”. Thankfully, Thompson’s designs takes the old in a new direction, showing “tell tale signs of her Dadaist leanings.”

An old suitcase stirs up the wanderlust in all of us and retains a nostalgic power as if it were a talisman—hence, its prominence in recent designs of note. Recently featured in the December 2009 issue of House & Leisure, Recreate’s Suitcase Chair stuffs a classic tufted chair inside a beaten up old Samsonite shell. Upholstered in 100% white linen, Suitcase Chair sits on whitewashed timber turned legs. If you have doubts about its sturdiness, cast away your fears: the internal structure is reinforced steel. The piece indeed brings together “South African craftsmanship with high end finishes and her own eclectic perfectionist flair.”

An ergonomically designed floating ‘inner tube’ for fishing and an indoor rocking chair for reading, the Pastil Chair is a multi-tasking masterpiece.

It is the second in line of Aarnio’s iconic plastic creations which echo the pop culture and spirit of their time, debuted in 1967, after the Ball Chair (presented at the International Furniture Fair Cologne 1966), and prior to the Bubble Chair (1968). Through these pieces (amongst others), Aarnio explored the possibilities of the new material plastic while remaining true to the Scandinavian design tradition of quality and durability.

The product shape comes from a small lozenge, a ‘pastil’. The idea was that “a lot of empty, cushioned space is sent to the other side of the world inside the Ball Chair. A new round chair would fit in this space, and so the diameter of the Pastil chair is the same as the opening of the ball chair.” Aarnio made the first prototype out of polystytrene to verify the measurements, ergonomics and rocking ability. A year after completing its design, he received the American Industrial Design Award (1968) for the Pastil Chair – and The New York Times described it and the Ball Chair as “the most comfortable forms to hold up the human body”.

From the Ball chair Aarnio designed the Bubble Chair – an adaptation or ‘improvement’ of its design. Similarly, Aarnio designed the Tomato chair to improve upon the design of the Pastil chair. Aarnio explains, “I realized that Pastil Chair floats and carries the person who sits in it in water but it is very rickety. If there were three items like two great armrests and the back of the chair would be stable, and this is how the idea of the Tomato Chair was born.”

Well known for his innovative furniture designs in the 1960s, notably his plastic and fiberglass chairs, Aarnio’s work is iconic and the Pastil chair is no exception. Designed to be viewed from many angles, it’s best as a free-standing piece rather than being hidden in a corner. Bold, shiny and colorful – it adds a bit of fun to any environment.

Brazilian designers Carolina Armellini and Paulo Biacchi of Fetiche Design have created the R540 Rocking Bench.

“We developed the design of the weft of threads as a “connecting dots” game, looking for a ergonomic radius seating. The result is the 540 milimeters radius (~22 inches). We developed a contemporary product, but with a strong emotional interaction. This kind of threads were part of our childhood in the garden seats of the interior of Brazil. This nostalgic reference is evident in this product.”

Architects Johannes Foersom & Peter Hiort-Lorenzen have designed the EJ 6 Yasmin chair for the Danish furniture manufacturer Erik Jørgensen.

Yasmin is created for daydreaming and absorption with its soft shapes, surrounding corpus, impressive comfort and low height, which lead your thoughts toward Asian traditions and the Zen culture’s focus on physical balance and mental harmony. The chair is beautifully elevated on a steel cross construction, and its changeable expression, according to fabric selection, makes it suitable for different lounge scenarios. Technically, the chair is built around a fibreglass shell covered with cold cured foam, and in order to ensure comfort the chair is completed with a pillow in Panthera foam.

The Bouquet Chair by Tokujin Yoshioka is meant to bring a touch of summer and nature in your cozy crib.

Sublime simplicity for this innovative, amazing design by Tokujin Yoshioka.
“I got the idea for Bouquet from the installation I created last October for Moroso’s New York showroom. I used about 30,000 paper tissues to recreate a cloud-like atmosphere. The Bouquet makes people who sit on it happy, just as a bouquet makes the person who receives it happy. The vibrant, delicate colours trigger different sensations in each of us.”
The Bouquet chair “blooms” on a slim, chrome-metal stem that blossoms with white or delicately-coloured “petals” made of hand-folded fabric squares sewn one by one, with great care and infinite patience, to completely cover the internal surface of the egg-shaped, wrap-around shell.
Tokujin Yoshioka, is a great “couturier” with a meticulous eye for detail, he is a designer whose delicate, poetic, elegant designs help us to dream.
He likes to astonish us by producing surprising effects from simple, almost banal objects which he interprets and uses in an extraordinary way by means of his ability to see beyond and to reinterpret the world through the characteristic poetry and harmony of Japanese culture.

If you are interested in purchasing a Bouquet Chair you should check Moroso but keep in mind the price is a bit higher than you would expect (around 7800$).
