The whole movement towards security and safety in the home had as the central piece and also started with the door knob. Interior door knobs are available in four primary styles :

Privacy knobs turn and operate a latch mechanism and they have a push pin lock, being used mostly on bathrooms and bedrooms.

Passage knobs turn and operate a latch mechanism.

Single dummy knobs do not turn or operate a latch mechanism and it is one knob on the exterior side of the door.

Double dummy knobs do not operate a latch mechanism and it is a knob on either side of the door.

Most double dummy knobs cannot be used on two sparate doors.

As door knobs set age they can become dented or scratched so replacing them with high quality sets is really important. Solid brass doorknobs sets are extremely durable and resistant.

In order to give your door a different look, you can find handles that can replace a door knob. Also there are sliding door handles that have a more industrial look and add a touch of modern design to your home. An added bonus of the door handle knob varieties is that for some they are easier to open. As many age people have limited mobility in their hands from arthritis or other muscle reducing ailments. Sometimes grabbing a hold of a normal door knob and turning it is a difficult proposition. But with a sliding door handle it’s much easier to open a door, just push the handle down and the door pops open. Even if they have limited hand mobility, these doors can be opened by just leaning on the handle to trigger the mechanism.
